Employing a Builder – The Honest Truth Part 1.

I think I am right when I suggest your biggest concern when employing a builder and having works done on your property is the fact that you are going to be dealing with a total stranger who you really know nothing about. Think about it, what do you really know about this person? They may come with great recommendations but unfortunately you have no idea what is going on behind the scenes in this person’s life, how solvent this person is and how good is he at what he actually does, you just don’t know. He is only as good as the trades who are working for him and if they haven’t been paid, as we hear quite often happens, you could be in trouble. When employing a builder you have to work on trust and that can be dangerous for you believe me, in today’s market place trust has flown out of the window.

We see many cases were the builder who may be a good man has been let down on payments from his last job and he runs into financial difficulty while working on another job, the end result can only be chaos, a poorly finished job, if it gets finished at all and the client is left out in the cold with nowhere to turn. This, believe it or not, is quite a common scenario.

The other side of the coin is the builder who never had any intention from day one of completing your job, this person is a very dangerous person to have around as they care only about getting their hands on your money, your safety or that of your family is given no consideration at all, you may well think they are mindless yobos but you would be mistaken, in fact they are very clever devious people who are well versed in every scam you could think of.

It is fine to say you can take them to court to get the job finished, but what do you do in the mean time to get your job finished to a decent standard? You do the only thing you can do & that’s pay out more money in an attempt to get it completed, after all you have to live somewhere. Now we have the problem of where is this money coming from, it has to be found so you may have to go into debt to get this money.

We will continue next week, in Part 2.
